A
BRIEF HISTORY
Shawnee
First Church of God was first known as Lima
First
Church
of God founded in 1941.
The church first met in the downstairs of the parsonage they bought, and
then began building a sanctuary (meeting in the basement).
They abandoned plans to finish this
building when the former synagogue became available. This building became
known as West Market Street Church of God.
In the late 1970’s the congregation moved to Shawnee
Township
where they met in the Grange Hall
(now a house on Ft. Amanda road) while a new church was built on Yoakam Road.
(The former West Market Street Church of God was razed and the site is currently one of St.
Rita hospital's parking lots.)
Since becoming Shawnee First Church of God, its
pastors have included Pastors Ben Keckler (1976-1983), Howard Ruley (1984-1988), Bob
Malick (1989-1994), Ben Tobias (1994-1999), and
Mark Chambers (2000-present). Several interim
pastors have also served during pastoral transitions: Richard Wilkin served as interim between Ben Keckler and Howard Ruley;
Bur Shilling served between Howard Ruley and Bob Malick; Dale Brougher served
between Bob Malick and Ben Tobias; and Travis Perry served between Ben Tobias and Mark
Chambers.
